This month FamilyWise received a $100,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Trust: $25,000 designated for capital improvements and $75,000 for general operations to strengthen children and families and improve family economic stability. We end cycles of family violence, keeping children and their caregivers safe through education and support services. The criteria for success are demonstrated through eliminated or reduced abuse in families, improved parenting and life skills, and unified families where kids meet developmental benchmarks.
FamilyWise is prioritizing the following efforts to build its capacity and further strengthen its high-quality services.
- Increased financial support for staff who are seeking to enhance their credentials. This has been particularly beneficial for staff who have non-traditional education backgrounds. Investing in staff improves retention and helps FamilyWise meet the needs of our diverse community. Additionally, it improves the financial well-being and economic condition of staff because they earn higher wages as a result of their increased credentials. FamilyWise will continue its participation in the Nonprofit Emerging Leaders Academy collaboration.
- Dedicate staff time to child welfare recidivism project. In fulfillment of our mission to strengthen families, FamilyWise is working with counties, the family judicial system and other social services agencies to give families the tools and support they need to stay out of the child welfare system, when that outcome is in the best interest of all family members. This work includes pursuing accreditation for the supervised visitation program and developing training for non-professional court-designated supervisors.
- Continue partnership with counties on child welfare redesign (ALIA – 10 of 10 for Kids initiative) to enable system change for the benefit of children and families.
- Adapt Wraparound services in response to a community identified need in Washington County and create a path to engage successful graduates of the program as mentors to current participants as paid Family Support Partners.
Our 2018 organizational priorities also include a facilities upgrade that will go a long way in helping us accommodate more families as we expand our programs in Minneapolis.
The Otto Bremer Trust has been a longtime supportive partner to the mission of FamilyWise—since 1997—and the Trust is keeping step with our growth.
