FamilyWise is pleased to announce that it has received $30,000 from the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation to support parent education programming in 2016 for mothers and their children who are recovering from family violence. As mothers recover and work to break cycles of family violence, they face possible termination of parental rights and the children risk foster placement. The grant allows FamilyWise to help families resolve concerns regarding the safety and custody of children while helping parents build better support systems.
Since 1976, FamilyWise has been keeping children safe and helping families gain the stability needed to lead healthy and productive lives. FamilyWise provides parent education, comprehensive support services, and supervised visitation and safe exchange services to at-risk children and families experiencing trauma. Over 1,600 families were served in 2015 and nearly 2,150 children were kept safe while parents learned to help them achieve age-appropriate developmental milestones.
In addition to support for our Parenting Education program, the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation has generously given additional funding for some unfunded gaps in service. The first need was to enhance the use of our new parent education curriculum and the Foundation will fund the training materials for parents to keep for their own reference.
Also, FamilyWise is the only Minnesota agency certified to provide the nationally recognized High Fidelity Wraparound model to build family stability for youth with mental health issues. This team-based youth intervention helps families recognize and build the natural supports that are critical for longer term success. Credentialing staff is expensive and depends on an external national consultant. Funding will support certification of the program manager to become a Coach Mentor and create agency self-sufficiency for training and credentialing additional staff.
About the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation
The Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation, Inc. was incorporated in 1950 to engage its family members in meaningful, responsible philanthropy that promotes the welfare of human and natural resources. The Foundation is supported and governed by members of the Weyerhaeuser Family and makes grants to initiatives serving the interests of children, specifically direct service programs that create and promote stability, resilience, and healing for children who have witnessed domestic violence—the focus of the FamilyWise funded project—and international services for women and girls to overcome violence, poverty and other hardships and the work of sustainable forests and communities.
