Donations to FamilyWise make a profound difference to our agency and in the lives of the families we serve. Please read about one family in our Supervised Parenting program, to which Medtronic recently contributed 150 craft kits.
During Supervised Parenting, parents and their children have the opportunity to safely visit. FamilyWise tries to make visits as natural as possible. Craft kits help with that.
The Smith Family—Fueled by Art
The Smith father visits his three boys: a 7-month old, a two-and-a-half-year old and a four-and-a-half-year old. This week, they chose one of the “Hot Chocolate Buddies” craft kits Medtronic donated. While Dad rocked and fed the baby, the two little boys solemnly threaded the marshmallows on the toothpicks, carefully licking or nibbling each marshmallow Dad counted, “1’, “2”, “3”. Dad admired the stacked marshmallows as the kids proudly waved them around, and encouraged the children to add the pretzel arms and legs.
The boys made snowmen monsters, leading to some “monster-talkin’-to-monster” play, with Dad coaching on “nice-monster behavior”. Dad was thrilled that the 2-year old with autism said a few words.
This simple kit enabled so much learning. The family all played together, even while Dad’s hands were full with tending to the baby. Dad gave lots of calm encouragement and instructions. The children were engrossed in the wonderfulness of marshmallows, so counting and colors (white marshmallows, brown chocolate) flowed naturally. Dad complemented the kids on their behavior, which made them proud and strengthened their relationship. The kids left Dad with sticky smiles and a wonderful memory.
Thank you, Medtronic, for fueling fun and authentic parenting time at FamilyWise!
