FamilyWise is pleased to announce that it has received $3,000 from the Initiative Foundation to support Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Services at Spirit River Community Center in 2016. Funding from the Foundation – a partner since 2011 – has allowed FamilyWise to reach populations in East Central Minnesota. This partnership has reduced the economic and logistic barriers of families where the challenge of poverty is often exacerbated by lack of geographic proximity to safe, center-based visitation services. Additionally, FamilyWise strives to keep its fees affordable through a sliding fee scale and charges no fees to documented victims of domestic violence. These services can preserve the safety and confidentiality of victims, preventing the need for multiple occurrences of relocation.
Since 1976, FamilyWise has been keeping children safe and helping families gain the stability needed to lead healthy and productive lives. FamilyWise provides parent education, comprehensive support services, and supervised visitation and safe exchange services to at-risk children and families experiencing trauma. Over 1,600 families were served in 2015 and nearly 2,150 children were kept safe while parents learned to help them achieve age-appropriate developmental milestones.
About the Initiative Foundation
The Initiative Foundation was formed in 1986 by a partnership of regional leaders and The McKnight Foundation and serves the 14 counties of Central Minnesota, with its more than 12,000 square miles and 700,000 residents. It is one of six Minnesota Initiative Foundations (MIF) serving Greater Minnesota. Independent and responsive to local needs and opportunities, each Foundation was created to strengthen its regional economy and communities. The MIF partners share ideas while investing in business loans, nonprofit grants, programs, and donor services. The MIF model is unique to Minnesota. No other U.S. state has a similar foundation network that unites community and economic development.
