We’re pleased to announce that the Carolyn Foundation of Minneapolis has partnered with FamilyWise to expand current outreach efforts in Minneapolis schools. The Foundation has awarded FamilyWise a $10,000 grant to provide youth and their families with High Fidelity Wraparound services. Representatives of Carolyn Foundation had a chance to visit our main office on University Avenue this spring and meet with program beneficiaries to see High Fidelity Wraparound ’s success firsthand.
High Fidelity Wraparound is a service intended to keep youth at home with their family instead of a correctional or residential treatment facility. As part of this program, the family creates a plan and increases its support network by identifying specific people in the community who can help. A credentialed facilitator works with the family and team members involved in the plan to follow up on goals. This process continues until the family is self-sufficient enough to coordinate the process on its own. This is the only program of its kind in the region.
Carolyn Foundation’s grant is a way for the Foundation to activate their priority of serving economically-disadvantaged youth and empowering them by supporting their families and others to inspire, nurture, educate and guide them toward achieving long-term stability and well-being. Specifically, youth in grades 6-12 who have serious, poorly-supported mental health challenges with emotional and behavioral distress will be targeted. While only 10% of all program participants currently live in Minneapolis, FamilyWise is looking to expand service in Minneapolis to youth not referred through county systems. Although we’ve secured partial funding through the State of Minnesota, additional funding is needed to ensure services are not delayed during current program expansion.
About Carolyn Foundation
The Carolyn Foundation was founded in 1964 by the estate of Carolyn McKnight Christian. Carolyn had no children so the children of her sister, Harriett McKnight Crosby were named as heirs. Rather than inherit the funds, her nieces and nephews chose to start a foundation in line with a long-standing family tradition of active community involvement and service. Since the Foundation was formed, over 50 million dollars in grants have been made to improve the lives of children, communities and the environment through the personal involvement of successive generations of the family of Carolyn McKnight Christian. Since 1976, FamilyWise has been keeping children safe and helping families gain the stability needed to lead healthy and productive lives. FamilyWise provides parent education, comprehensive support services, and supervised visitation and safe exchange services to at-risk children and families experiencing trauma. Over 1,600 families were served in 2015 and nearly 2,150 children were kept safe while parents learned to help them achieve age-appropriate developmental milestones.
